Michelle and Maryanne hide in Gemini City’s Market District, a neon‑lit maze of holograms, narcotics, and synthetic distraction. It’s a place where the city pretends to be alive.
Michelle outfits Maryanne with urban essentials: a linx wristband, audio tags, Connex AR lenses. When CARaNN, the city’s AI backbone, bonds to Maryanne’s genome, she gasps as the augmented world unfolds. She is now a legal citizen, connected to every layer of the city’s neural infrastructure.
But the joy is fragile.
At dinner, Maryanne says softly, “Considering I lived and died 133 years ago, I feel fine. I think.” Her amnesia is not emptiness, it is partition.
Then a stranger approaches: Gary Stansky, a GRInd network engineer. Nervous. Pale. Terrified.
He reveals that he saw Dr. Wells the night before, with his friend Jonesy. Both men have since vanished. He intercepted a message before his clearance was revoked: “operations must commence within 48 hours.” GRInd firewalls collapsed. Packet traffic surged. AASID was involved.
Michelle understands instantly: Wells traced the sabotage to GRInd. Jonesy confirmed it. Now both are gone.
Before she can warn Gary, Detective Wayne appears. Calm. Cold. Gary bolts. Wayne offers Michelle silent passage out of the district.
She accepts, torn between distrust and survival.
Teaser question: When every clue points to a conspiracy inside the city’s neural backbone, who do you trust, the man who keeps appearing, or the fear that tells you not to?
